WILLIAM DUBBS William Dubbs, 81, native of Pine Grove, died in Stanton, California, where he lived, on Monday at 5:30 p.m. A retired Army officer, he owned fruit groves in California. Mr. Dubbs visited in Pine Grove in 1939 and 1954.
Surviving are his wife Carolyn, native of Kentucky and a retired registered nurse, and four sons, all living in Texas. Mr. Dubbs was the last member of his family. His funeral was held this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from Winchester Mortuary, Winchester, California. Dower, 73, the former Viola Moyer, native of Pine Grove, died Friday at her home, 1338 N. 11th Reading. Mrs. Dower was a daughter of Charles and Mathilda Fisher Moyer. She was a member of Salem Evangelical United Brethren Church and was affiliated with Chapter 148, Dames of Malta.
Surviving are her husband, Elmer A. Dower; four daughters: Ruth wife of Gerald Hessler, and Anna wife of Russell Seidel, both of Reading; Olive wife of Donald Zerbe, Kenhorst, and Miriam wife of Gerald Matts, Lancaster; three sons: Elmer C. and both of Reading, and Dawson E. of Dauberville; also 11, grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Her funeral was held on Tuesday from the Gibson and Sanders Funeral Home, Reading.

SO THIS IS NEW YORK By NORTH CALLAHAN Some time ago I dined with a man named Edward Streeter, an unusual combination of a He is a writer and a banker, personas until he retired. We usually think of a banker as writing checks or promissory notes letters reminding peopie to save money or deposit funds or to pay for those they have used. But this individual is different. Edward Streeter is best known for his delightful book, "Dere Mabel" which poked fun at World War I and caused Americans all over the country to draw a sigh of relief upon finding that war, with all its terrors, has a lighter side when viewed through the eyes a participant expert in the ways of humor and recording it.
Since that time, Streeter has continued his writing, at intervals, describing brides and suburbs and other intriguing things such as banks. Not all writers are smart enough to keep close to banking. Most of those I know are not even close to money. But Streeter reminded me that this is a historic town as well as the financial capital of the world. For example, he points out, George Washington were to return to New York today, there would be three buildings he would recognize, Fraunces Tavern, where he said farewell to his officers; St.
Paul's Chapel, which survived the Revolutionary fire; and the Jumel mansion, where Washington made his headquarters for a time until he had to get out hurriedly ahead of the redcoats. Later, Aaron Burr lived there after he had married the widow of Mr. Jumel. The man of whom Burr disposed, Alexander Hamilton, is of more interest to Mr. Streeter, for Hamilton founded the Bank of New York, of which author was vice president for years.
In a vivid description of these early days, Streeter tells of how one of my favorite historical characters, Henry Knox, the youngest major general in the Continental Army, assumed command of the troops from Washington just 180 years ago. He led a military detachment down lower Broadway and took over Fort George, south of Bowling Green, from a taciturn British officer whose discomfiture is understandable, since he and his companions were forced to leave. It was a simple ceremony but a memorable one, and this fat, genial chief of the artillery enjoyed every bit of it. After all, his country had won the Revolution, he was an important part of the victory, and now he had the pleasure of commanding the troops who were ushering out the detested lobster backs. As the British were taking their leave and there was no longer any doubt about their departure, Knox hurried back to report to Washington who with his staff was about half a mile north of the present City Hall.
Out in the harbor, small craft were swarming, either helping with the evacuation or watching it. Already the British transports were outlined against the afternoon sun as they hove to and out to sea through the Narrows, leaving the young nation which they had founded 176 years previously. The American Revolution was over. For eight long years it had lasted, seven of which the British occupied New York, despite the plans and efforts of Washington and Knox to re-take it, But though there had been no fighting within the city itself after Washington and his raw and ragged troops had been chased out in 1776, Tories had clashed with Whigs all around it, as well as other military actions. Less than a week after the British had moved in, fire broke out at the lower end of Manhattan and destroyed much of the metropolitan area as it then existed.
The British suspected that the Americans set the fire, because some of them, including General Nathaniel Greene, had wanted to, and Washington even asked Congress about burning it, but the idea was disapproved. Since then, this has been a cosmopolitan place and people all nationalities are not only welcomed but most of them feel at home here. Rotarians Told Of District Governor's Golf Tournament The Pine Grove Rotary Club met at the Sweet Arrow Recreation Center on Tuesday, August 13. Visiting Rotarians were Jim Radcliffe of Newton, New Jersey, and Bob Reider of Schuylkill Haven, Russell Felty brought as his guest his grandson, Robert Ochs. Ivan Newcomer was welcomed back from a vacation that combined business with a visit to his daughter in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Frank Winsheimer also was welcomed on his return from a summer school session in Philadelphia. for the District Governor's Golf Tournament were announced. This contest will take place on August 28 at the Susquehanna Country Club, with a golf fee of $3.00 and $3.00 for dinner. Those wishing to enter the contest should notify Arthur H. Henninger on Tuesday August 20.
Prizes will be awarded in the tournament. Immediately following the regular meeting, the budget committee met to set up a tentative budget for the balance of this Rotary year. The next meeting of Rotary will be held on August 20 at 6:30 p. m. at the Sweet Arrow Lake Recreation Center.
CYCLE ACCIDENT Carl Bowers 20, of Pine Grove R. D. 1, was discharged from the Pottsville Hospital on Monday, after treatment for injuries received in a motorcycle accident which took place on Saturday. Bowers' motorcycle struck a tree on the outskirts of Pine Grove. He received abrasions of the face and arms, and of his right eye.

He was graduated from Pine Grove High School in 1903 attended Williamson Trade School. Mr. Sarge was foreman of the Mack Brick Company operations in Pine Grove at the age of 19, and later owned and operated the Pennsylvania Hotel, which stood at the site of Pine Grove Bank and Trust Company building.
He also conducted an auto dealership and garage for a time in the building behind the present J. Wilson Barto Store. was a lieutenant in the old Company 4th Regiment, PNG, and served as a captain in the 50th Infantry, 3rd Division, in I. A lifetime regret was his inability to convince his superiors to send hm overseas with his men. Instead, he was assigned as an instructor at Fort Ogelthorpe, and an ROTC instructor at Plattsburgh, He then was assigned fessor of Military Science and Tactics at Penn State.
He was selected to go to Russia as military attache to Dr. Edward Sparks, then Penn State president, but Dr. Sparks died before he took his consular post and Mr. Sarge returned to Pine Grove. During World War II, he was a civil defense director.
After leaving the postmastership, Mr. Sarge worked at the Schuylkill County courthouse for a number of years before moving to Legion state as rehabilitation diHe was very active in Republican politics on the county and state level and was an unsuccessful candidate for county commissioner in 1936, running as an independent Republican supported by war veterans. Mr. Sarge was a member of Pine Grove Post No. 374, American Legion; and was a 50-year member of Pine Grove Lodge No.
409, Free and Accepted Masons. In the past, he was an organizer and secretary of the old Pine Grove Civic League, and a member of the troop committee of Boy Scout Troop No. 1, the Harrisburg Consistory, Rajah Temple of the Shrine, the Sojourners, and the 40 et 8, holding local, state, and national offices. He also was an organizer and first secretary of the Pine Grove Rotary Club. Mr.
Sarge is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mertie Bressler Sarge, Pine Grove elementary school teacher, and a son, David, 19, a student at Teterboro, N. School of He also is survived Aeronauticster. Mrs. Lucille Bendigo, Tower City, and two sons, Richard, of Lancaster, and Jack, of Blackwood, N.
J. These children were born to Mr. Sarge and his former wife, Mrs. Naomi Smith Sarge. There are 10 grandchildren.
A sister, Mrs. Margaret Haupt, lives in Seattle, Wash, Mr. Sarge earlier had been; married to Catherine Gensemer, who died in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1912. She was the daughter of the late George W. Gensemer.
